Halloween cake ball disaster....

So I have tried three different times to make cake balls and I thought last night was going to be my night.  I got this great recipe from my friend, and then tried to copy the directions on the pioneer women's blog. http://thepioneerwoman.com/  This is what they are supposed to look like....

Awful!!!!!  What am I doing wrong???? Please comment so my kids can have these cute treats tonight!
